Books I Read
The Devil in the White City: Murder, Magic and Madness at the Fair that Changed America by Erik Larson – Set in Chicago in 1893, this book blends together the true tales of Daniel H. Burnham; the architect who designed the 1893 Chicago World’s Fair and Dr. H.H. Holmes; the serial killer who lured victims to their deaths in his elaborately constructed “murder castle”. This book in non-fiction but written so that you never feel like you’re reading history…although I’m sure the fascinating history also has a part to play in that. Such a good book!
Books in the Queue
Fantastic Beasts & Where to Finds Them: The Screenplay by J.K. Rowling – The screenplay from the recently released movie (which was excellent); this is sitting on my side table just waiting to be read!
Demelza by Winston Graham – After an exciting finish to the second season of Poldark, I am eager to get back into reading the books and I just happen to have this book and the third book in the series (titled Jeremy) to read.
Can’t Miss Movies
Dr. Strange – The origin story of the Sorcerer Supreme; Dr. Stephen Strange, a gifted surgeon whose hands are irreparably injured in a car accident and searches the world over for a cure for his debilitation. Enrolling at Kamar-Taj under the tutelage of the Ancient One, Strange learns that there is far more to the world than meets the eye…or that the mind can comprehend and begins his journey to master the mystical arts and perhaps save the world in the process. Definitely loved this movie…so much saw, I might have seen it twice – Dr. Strange is a great addition to the Marvel Universe!
Fantastic Beasts & Where to Find Them – If anyone could take a wee companion book and translate it into a series of five movies; well that would be J.K. Rowling. The first of what will be five movies; I saw Fantastic Beasts over Thanksgiving break and loved it! The story follows Newt Scamander on his adventures through New York, recapturing magical beasts escaped from his case. Newt is joined on his adventures by witchy (as in they’re magical) sisters Tina and Queenie and no-Maj (muggle) Jacob. Along the way they come in contact with MACUSA and much darker forces than planned and while the movie is darker than anything in the Harry Potter franchise, there are still plenty of laughs to be had too!
Must See TV
Westworld – I am completely addicted to this fascinating show! The synopsis from HBO says this: “Westworld is a dark odyssesy about the dawn of artificial consciousness and the evolution of sin. Set at the intersection of the near future and the imagined past, it explores a world in which every human appetite, no matter how noble or depraved, can be indulged.” Sounds interesting, right? The simpler explanation is that the story is set in a theme park that is inhabited by extremely lifelike “hosts” programmed to play out multiple storylines that guests are integrated into. The only problem? Some of the hosts are starting to glitch…just a little bit…
Poldark – The second season just ended on the 27th and the finale was filled with interesting twists and turns. I love watching the drama and intrigue of life in Cornwall in the late 1700’s…and I also love watching Aidan Turner, ha-ha! If you are a fan of Downton Abbey and find yourself missing it, I’d definitely suggest checking out Poldark. It can at times move a little slower than Downton, but the characters (for the most part) are lovable and intriguing and the storylines are fun to watch unfold!
This is Us – I cannot get enough of this show…even though it makes me cry almost every week. Oh wait; I think I HAVE cried every week! Not always a sad cry though. This show is just so completely heartfelt and wonderful; so real, I suppose. The characters are relatable and the stories that are told are so touching. I love watching the Pearson family and if you haven’t started watching this yet; the Fall finale is next week and then you have time to catch up over the holidays! Get on it!
Starbucks Holiday Drinks – Yes; I definitely went there! I will sip a PSL and enjoy it…but my true Starbucks jam is served in those fancy red cups: Peppermint Mocha and Chestnut Praline Latte…all day long! They are my absolute favorite and I love them so!
Panda Express – I may be late to the party here…but I ate at Panda Express for the first time ever in my life just a week ago and I kind of loved it. I want some more fried rice and orange chicken! Oh! And maybe a couple fortune cookies!
Thanksgiving Dinner – It was yummy and I don’t say that to toot my own horn. I thought I did a pretty good job whipping up our annual feast…and the leftovers have led to many other delicious creations: turkey & gravy biscuits, turkey pot pie…
What I’m Looking Forward To (maybe this section should be called “all the things”)
A Weekend in Hershey – I’ll be spending the first weekend of December in Hershey with some lovely ladies from my Momma’s church and I know it will be so fun! There will be plenty of good conversation, shopping and of course – chocolate!
Christmas Tea – The ladies ministry at my church hosts a Christmas tea each year and my Mom and I will be checking it out this year. There is a talent show thrown in for good measure and considering almost 200 people have signed up for it, I think it’s safe to say it will be a hit!
DC Christmas Weekend – I’ll be spending the weekend before Christmas in DC doing a couple things: seeing Handel’s Messiah at the Kennedy Center and placing wreaths at Arlington as part of Wreaths Across America. I’m sure there will be some other stuff tossed in here and there…regardless, I always enjoy spending time in DC!
Lindsey Comes Home – My little sister will be coming home for Christmas! I don’t think I really need to elaborate on that one too much…because my little sister is one of my favorite people and I can’t wait to see her!
CHRISTMAS – This is also self-explanatory…because Christmas is the BEST!
New York City – My family and I are taking a quick train jaunt up to NYC the day after Christmas to see the lights and catch a Broadway show! There is just something so special about the big city during the holidays and I can’t wait to see all the lights and window displays!
And of course, the New Year (I feel like that has to be capitalized) will be upon us before we know it. So – there in a nutshell is what I was reading, watching and enjoying in November!
